Ordained minister Reverend Ben McCracken of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) wrote into Mommyhood to Hollywood to respond to the “One Million Moms” article which was written in support of Ellen Degeneres and this is what he had to say:

“The reasons I loved your article in defense of Ellen Degeneres, despite the fact that you are a member of the family and I am a Lutheran pastor, is that you are following the teachings of Jesus.

Much of Jesus’ work was trying to redeem the never ending human condition of hating people who are different.  He still has a long way to go.  Jesus’ story of the Good Samaritan was not primarily about one man helping another, but it was about the Samaritans whom the religious persons of his time hated.  The “good religious people” of his time hated the Samaritans because they were different.  In other Bible verses, Jesus spent time talking with a Samaritan who was a women – two things that angered people of Jesus’ time.

So, Michelle, you are standing on holy ground when you speak out for people who are different. I liked your statement that “Ellen promotes kindness toward others, respect, truth, love,…. she is a true humanitarian who brings joy into peoples lives through laughter.   Peace, Ben”
