As moms, we are responsible for teaching our kids a varied of incredibly important things: how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, how to care for skinned knees and broken hearts, and how to brush their teeth and have them spit without covering every inch of the bathroom in toothpaste.

However, some of the really beautiful things we get to teach our children is how to be in constant awe and reverence of the world around them, as well as how to take care of the planet and the people who call it home.  Therefore, one of the most important things we can teach our children, is how to be awesome global citizens.

It is important for me to instill in my own kids a passion to really engage in the world around them and this is what led me to create Groovy Planet, a program designed to get kids fired up about recycling, fair trade, and conservation.  Groovy Planet provides a way for parents to help get their kids involved, work with them toward creating a cleaner planet, while also teaching them about social change.  Also you can have a rockin’ good time while doing all of this!  Groovy Planet was originally created to help me find ways in a very busy schedule to teach my own two kids how to become invested in what was going on in the world, so that they could understand that one kid can honestly make a difference.  Now I hope it will do the same for your kids too!

The great thing about kids is that they are so excited to get involved and they want to feel like they are doing something good in the world.  Therefore, that makes it even more fun and rewarding for us adults to be positive role models by teaching them how to take care for our world.   Recycling teaches them that the decisions they make can have a profound effect on our environment. Moreover, fair trade allows them to really understand how they have the power to touch people’s lives.  My daughter discovered Beads for Life bracelets about a year ago.  The beads are made from recycled paper by women in Uganda who use the money to build homes and support schools in their community.  Even a year later, whenever anyone compliments her on the bracelets, she takes the time to tell them about the women who made them.

Groovy Planet can create the same experience for  your children by providing a fun and engaging way for them to learn about recycling, conservation, and fair trade.  It’s a monthly program where we mail a kit to your home filled with games, activities, volunteering challenges, and either a fair trade or a recycled item.  I’ve seen how teaching my kids to take care of the environment, as well as reach out to help others, has helped to shape how they look at the world.  They truly feel like they have the power to make a difference and as their mom, it’s the most valuable thing I believe I have given them.
