Hispanic Heritage Month is very important for my family because it gives us a chance to truly recognize our Puerto Rican heritage. A great way for us to celebrate doing this is through our love of food and cooking. So this weekend we celebrated at my mom’s house where she cooked a delicious and traditional Puerto Rican meal. The meal consisted of white rice and red beans, fried chicken, and fried plantains, also known as arroz con pollo, y Habichuelas, y Plantanos.
Family dinners are already a great way to spend quality time with one another, but it’s also an excellent way to have quality conversations with one another to truly reconnect with what’s going on in each other’s lives. At our traditional Puerto Rican meal we discussed with our daughter Madison, who is 4 in-a-half years old how she is half Puerto Rican. We explained to her that Puerto Rico is where her Great-Grandmother and Great-Grandfather were born. She asked us, “What is Puerto Rico.” We answered her by explaining that it is a beautiful island in a place call the Caribbean, where they speak the beautiful language of Spanish. Our little one was clearly trying to wrap her brain around the idea of a place where she has never been, but continued the conversation by saying that she wanted to go to Puerto Rico. We told her we would go on a family trip there someday, so that she and her baby sister Mia could see where their family came from.
Another great way to expose your family and ours to the pride behind Hispanic Heritage Month is by tuning into ‘LATINO AMERICANS,’ which is a three-part, six-hour series which will document the history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped to shape North America over the last 500 years on PBS. LATINO AMERICANS will feature interviews with Puerto Rican star of West Side Story, Rita Moreno; Mexican-American author and commentator Linda Chavez, who also became the highest ranking woman in the Reagan White House; and Cuban singer and entrepreneur Gloria Estefan. LATINO AMERICANS will air on PBS on September 17th, September 24th, and October 1st from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. (EST).
