I had the recent opportunity to catch a pre-screening of “The Secret World Of Arrietty” based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed and beloved children’s book series, “The Borrowers.”
“The Secret World Of Arrietty” is from the legendary Studio Ghibli who also created “Spirited Away” and “Ponyo.” I’m happy to say that they absolutely have not let us down in their newest animated adventure.
The first thing I noticed in this film was how visually stunning it is, especially as a 2D animation. While I watched the movie I felt like I was witnessing a beautiful, vibrant painting come to life. There were certain scenes that appeared so realistic that I almost couldn’t believe that it was 2D animation.
“The Secret World Of Arrietty” is also beautifully written, the story itself is endearing and well told within the film and it is entertaining for both children and adults. It’s definitely a great family movie, however my recommendation would be for ages 6 and up. I don’t think preschool age children could grasps some of the concepts and themes within the storyline.
The cast of “The Secret World Of Arrietty” is amazing! With the talents of Bridgit Mendler as Arrietty, Will Arnett as Pod, David Henrie as Shawn, Amy Poehler as Homily, Moises Arias as Spiller, and Carol Burnett as Hara, all lending their voices to the spectacular film.
Although the movie may be filled with less “fantasy” than other Ghibli films, it was still absolutely fascinating to see Arrietty’s world in which she lives. I must also note that the sound in the film was out of this world. Ghibli obviously wanted us to hear the sounds from the tiny Arrietty’s perspective. It was a wonderful detail in the film.
I highly recommend this movie and I think it would be a shame for it to not be seen on the big screen because of how visually beautiful it is. So make it a fun family night and take your kids to see “The Secret World Of Arrietty.” It opens this Friday, February 17, 2012!
