There are so many New Years Resolutions that we make to ourselves that many of us never keep, for example to exercise, eat healthy, lose weight, etc, etc. However, what if we made a New Years Resolution that not only helped ourselves, but also helped someone else, such as through mentoring? In a way, this would be like making a New Years Resolution to another person, which then would possibly make us more accountable for keeping that resolution. Imagine how rewarding it would be to mentor a child or a teenager and also how rewarding it would be to actually see through on a New Years Resolution? It would be awesome!
That’s why I would like to invite all of you to become a mentor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. There is also a HUGE need specifically for Latino Bigs, because Latino youths who do not have adult mentors are at higher risk of dropping out of school, joining gangs, and involvement in drugs and alcohol. Many times all these youths need is a positive adult role model, someone that they can relate to, someone who can understand them, someone that they can look up to. That could be you! You don’t have to have a special educational degree or training to participate, all you have to be is an adult who sincerely cares and wants to help. Latino Bigs come from all walks of life and can play a huge part in making a positive impact on a child or teen’s life. So make a New Year’s resolution that contributes to changing our world for the better by becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister!
