Child Without Clothes in Snow! Abuse or Extreme Parenting? (VIDEO) Written by Michelle Rivera

It’s times like this when I wish parents needed a license to become parents. I find this parenting “technique” on this video to be cruel and abusive!

I was recently in Colorado with my daughter in the snow and she was all bundled up, having fun, sliding down the snow in her snow clothes when her mittens became wet. They were the only thing on her body that was not waterproof. I beat myself up for not having snow gloves on her instead of the mittens she was wearing. She wanted to keep playing in the snow as I worried that her little 3 year old hands would get frost bite if they were not properly covered up, since the mittens she was wearing were wet.

Just recently coming home from this fun and snowy family vacation, I can vividly comprehend how cold this poor little four year old boy must be as I watch this video! I’m disgusted that any parent would allow such an act of “discipline” or use it as an excuse that it is a “method” to build the little boy’s immunity up, as recently said in an article in Shine.

For me this video is difficult to watch, but what do you all think, is this abuse in your eyes or just extreme parenting? That seems to be the debate, but I believe it’s a no-brainer, can someone call child protective services please?

Is there a back story here? Maybe the kid was being disciplined for something he was repeatedly told not to do. It appears that this particular child wasn’t beat or struck in the video. He had no visible bruises or wounds from any other possible excessive beating. I’m only 27, but I was raised by my wonderful parents with an “old school” mentality. I was hit with wooden spoons, larger wooden spoons, belts, and even a willow tree branch a few times. It didn’t happen often, only when I clearly needed to be disciplined. The only thing I remember from each instance was to never do whatever action caused the beating in the first place. No harm has ever come from it besides having a sore backside for a few days after. I am not emotionally scarred from any that. In fact, I have a stable 9-5 job in addition to my own personal business on the side. I madly in love with the woman of my dreams who has also been the perfect mother to our two wonderful children. It’s time to stop worrying about how others raise their children. It’s not the business of anyone else as long as the child is not flat out abused. Children need discipline and despite being unorthodox at the worst, this is all that this appears to be.

Thanks Ryan for your comment. The Shine article, which is linked to this blog post says that this was being used as a method to raise the child’s immune system. You can find more of a back story there. I do agree that we need to worry about our own children, however, I strongly disagree that we should stop worrying about other people’s children though, as this is the reason why so many abused children get lost in the system…simply because people don’t care to be aware about it. We shouldn’t stick our nose in other parents’ business, however, we should still be aware of what’s going on, so that we don’t miss any possible signs that an abused or neglected child may give.
