By now many of you have heard about the tragic killing of 17 year old Trayvon Martin of Sanford, Florida. The teen was shot and killed last month by a neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, while he was walking home in his gated community from buying candy at a convenient store.
Apparently, Zimmerman called the non-emergency police line to report a “suspicious” looking person referring to the unarmed teenager. The dispatcher told Zimmerman not to follow the person, but Zimmerman did not adhere to what was advised. Instead he did follow Trayvon, which led to an altercation, which then led to Zimmerman shooting Trayvon in the chest, which killed him. As if this wasn’t tragic enough, the Sanford police department, which is handling the initial investigation has failed to bring up any charges against Zimmerman so far.
Sanford Police questioned Zimmerman, who claims it was self-defense, even though Trayvon had no weapon on hand. Therefore, they released Zimmerman without any charges. The police say Zimmerman was licensed to carry a gun (scary) and that they found no evidence to contradict his self-defense claim. However, what the Sanford police department has failed to recognize is that it is not their job to determine if this was or was not a self-defense case, but instead a jury’s job. This rings even more true because there is no evidence of Trayvon doing anything wrong. It was Zimmerman who followed Trayvon and not the other way around! It was also Zimmerman who was carrying a weapon, not Trayvon! Also, have you seen Zimmerman? It’s obvious he is bigger than the teenage boy, so what was he defending himself against? He is basically claiming self-defense against a smaller, unarmed teenage boy who was not even following or bothering Zimmerman in the first place!! DISGRACEFUL!!!
Our children are the air that we breathe and I am OUTRAGED, FRIGHTENED, and SADDENED to hear of this tragic killing of Trayvon Martin! I have family in Florida, specifically in Sanford and Lake Mary, and this could have easily been one of my family members. More so, this could happen anywhere and easily be anyones’ family member.
Where is the justice? And just so everyone knows, 17 year old Trayvon Martin had a clean record, but Zimmerman did not. According to attorney Benjamin Crump, Zimmerman’s record is anything but squeaky clean; in 2005 Orange County police charged Zimmerman with resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer. These charges were later dropped.
I absolutely hate it when people play the “Race Card,” however in this case I think Zimmerman simply saw a black teenager walking down the street at night in a gated community and he assumed the worst! This whole story disgusts me, especially as a mother! This careless man took away a precious life of a child who had a family who loved him. I would not even want to imagine being in this poor family’s place. The family’s interview below breaks my heart.
