I am a Christian, a Catholic to be exact. I am also a mom, living within a “traditional” family with a husband and a child. Therefore, you may categorize me as a “Christian mom.” My husband’s side of the family is Lutheran and his father is a Lutheran Minister and so you may also categorize his side of the family as Christian too. So since I am a Christian mom, you may wonder why the “Christian” based mom group ‘One Million Moms’ has offended me deeply.
OneMillionMoms.com is a Christian group, which is a Project of The American Family Association and they have recently made headlines with their campaign to try and stop Ellen Degeneres from being JC Penney’s new spokesperson because she is gay. On their website ‘One Million Moms’ states the following:
“Recently JC Penney announced that comedian Ellen Degeneres will be the company’s new spokesperson. Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families. More sales will be lost than gained unless they replace their spokesperson quickly. Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war then their brand transformation will be unsuccessful.”
Well I have a lot to say about this statement that is on the ‘One Million Moms’ website. The first thing is this, ‘One Million Moms’ you offend me! Please don’t speak for me as a Christian mom who has a “traditional” family, because I absolutely 200% applaud JC Penney for making Ellen Degeneres their spokesperson. As a Christian myself, I am so sick and tired of “Christians” like you, using “Christianity” as a way to practice and spew hatred and intolerance towards people. You’re giving the rest of us a bad name.
I am a long-time shopper of JC Penney who also happens to fall into your Christian based “traditional family,” as you call it. Therefore, I am the person you say will be offended and stop shopping at JC Penney simply because they now have an “open homosexual” as their spokesperson. However, all these things that you say is the furthest thing from the truth. THIS Christian mom (me) plans to continue shopping at JC Penney as I have done now for years, and I absolutely can’t wait to see what fun commercials Ellen Degeneres will be doing for them as their spokesperson. I already love her in the Cover Girl ads, which you ‘One Million Moms’ must not wear because I didn’t hear anything about you starting a boycott campaign against them.
Further more, how does replacing Ellen Degeneres show that JC Penney is deciding to be neutral in the “culture war” as you put it? If they gave into your demands how does that show neutrality to the millions of supporters and fans of Ellen, like myself, who do watch her show and have also been shopping at JC Penney for years? If JC Penney was to give into your demands by dumping Ellen then all that would simply mean is that they are now taking your side instead. This is NOT neutrality, this is hypocrisy! Your whole statement is ignorant and preposterous, as well as presumptuous in thinking that you are truly speaking for Christian moms. You’re NOT.
Some “Christians” like you, like to say how the Bible says homosexuality is a sin and so you think you can get away with trying to oppress homosexuals. “Christians” like you, like to quote Leviticus 18:22 as an argument against homosexuality. However, it is a known fact that Jesus Himself never even spoke once about homosexuality in the Bible and yet Christianity is suppose to be based on Jesus Christ’s teachings. Also, you same “Christians” don’t condemn other sins to the level that you like to condemn homosexuality. However, there are several sins in which the Bible says is cause for stoning and execution, such as not being a virgin when you are married, which is in Deuteronomy 22:13-21. Will you now also be asking unmarried people to prove that they are still virgins before they can obtain a job, such as being a spokesperson for a popular brand? I’m sure you ‘One Million Moms’ were all virgins when you were married too, right? And what about your husbands? If not, looks like some of you are going to go straight to hell and probably shouldn’t be representing this organization. Now tell me, how absurd does that sound? Do you see my point ‘One Million Moms?’ My guess is you probably don’t.
I would like to see more Christians practice this part of the Bible which says, “Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself.” People need to stop living so self righteously as though they are free of sins and above other human beings. Gays are entitled to the same rights, respect, and privileges as everyone else put on this Earth by God.
The last time I checked Ellen Degeneres promotes many “Traditional” values in which people are always talking about, but not truly demonstrating in real life, such as she does. Ellen promotes kindness towards others, respect, truth, love, and yes she even promotes marriage. She is a true humanitarian who brings joy into people’s lives through laughter. If that doesn’t promote good family values, then I don’t know what does.
Another issue that Ellen is against is bullying and to me ‘One Million Moms’ that’s just what you are, ‘One Million Bullies.’ You’re just trying to bully your views and put them upon other people, even when it is uncalled for with good people such as Ellen Degeneres.
Thank you JC Penney for not giving into the bullying of ‘One Million Moms’ and for keeping a treasure like Ellen Degeneres as your Spokesperson. Also Ellen, as a personal note to you please know that there are Christian moms who support you and appreciate the goodness you bring into this world.
