As a mother I can not even fathom the idea of leaving my child behind, especially to go to war.  Yet almost half of the more than 250,000 women who have been deployed to places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and its surrounding countries have done just this, and I commend them for having the strength to do so.

‘Mothers At War’ documents individual interviews of service women who share their heart-breaking stories of courage and strength while on deployment, as well as their fears of not making it back home to their children.

Many people can not understand or relate to a woman who can go to combat and then also be a woman who nurtures a child.  As a result there is a lot of controversy and criticism, which surround mothers who go to war.

However, ‘Mother’s At War’ opens up a dialog about military motherhood and it helps people to see these women for the human beings that they are, and not just a debatable topic of society.  It also shares the complexity of military mothers, breaking down the barriers of it not just simply being a black or white lifestyle in which they lead.

Many of these women don’t feel that they are victims of war, but instead feel they showed their child the ultimate act of love by defending their freedom and democracy.  Therefore, mothers who go to war deserve the same respect, support, and understanding as the men who are fathers that go to war.
